Hardware

The general hardware of the X8 is rather impressive. There’s a micro USB socket (underneath a somewhat annoying plastic flap), the power/screen lock button, and headphone socket that is compatible with Sony Ericsson’s inline headsets – thus the odd shape. The X8′s design is a tough one to nail down. Sony Ericsson has included quite a few additional rear panels in a variety of colors to funk up the handset.

Display

The X8 shows its superiority by treating you to its 3-inch capacitive LCD screen with resolution of 320×480 pixels – more than enough for this screen size.

Interface

The audio quality is something I had a problem with. Sony Ericsson has always complied with the norms for portable audio volume, however, the normalization on this device was very irritating and music is more or less inaudible when used in traffic. TrackID for music recognition is also present and accounted for.

The phone also comes bundled with applications like Creatouch (a drawing app, to showcase the touch capabilities), geotags, Roller coaster, Peggle and CA Gold Rush.

Like the HTC Sensation the EVO 3D comes with latest version of the Sense user interface. Sense 3.0 has customized lock screen. IN HTC 3D phone you can pick a theme for lock screen and then select four apps, that are visited most by you.

Design and OS:

Venue Pro is the shear size of the thing. It’s tall enough with the keyboard shut, but when you open it the phone feels a bit like holding a skyscraper in your palm – it’s a full 162mm tall.

Hardware

The screen is the largest shipping AMOLED panel at 4.1″ and WVGA 800x 480 resolutions. The sliding mechanism of Venue Pro is smooth and swift, and the black and chrome colour scheme isn’t unappealing.The Venue is running with the Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon CPU supported by 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and 16GB of storage via the micro SD card. The handset feels very speedy, no matter whether you’re messing around on the web using the excellent Internet Explorer browser, or just watching a few videos.

Stability and performance

Dell Venue Pro has been as stable as my HD7 and other WP7 devices. IT can be connected via both WiFi and 3G for Marketplace downloads and the device never stumbled or locked up even if 25 apps are in queue of downloading. IT provides 3G signal and have no concerns with RF reception quality. The battery of Venue Pro is bit better than my HD7 and WP7 devices

Design: The HTC Thunderbolt feels good in the hand although it is a little heavier than most phones. The 4.3” display is very big and pretty much the largest screen you can get for a handset.

Display: The TFT LCD large 4.3” display looks good and works well for text, photos or movies. Colors are nice, and the saturation is very decent. HTC Thunderbolt still has a much better display than the HTC EVO Shift 4G.

Photo and Video capture: The Thunderbolt captures very good photos and videos. The lag between tapping the screen and the photo actually being taken is fairly short.

The 720p video was remarkably free of artifacts or distortion — it doesn’t do continuous autofocus, but you can refocus on the fly with a tap on the screen.

Entertainment: The HTC Thunderbolt has surpassed YouTube’s capabilities by far. IT could do much better if YouTube were actually sending a DVD-quality stream.

HTC Thunderbolt will appear as a USB drive after connecting to USB port. There are also Android apps like WinAmp that can help to manage multiple files, but you’ll have to install WinAmp on your computer too.

Audio call quality: the audio quality on the Thunderbolt is OK, but not great.

Copy/paste: As I said above, HTC’s copy/paste is much better than Google’s in Android 2.2.

Web browsing (excellent): on all high-end Android phones, web browsing is very good, but the 4G speed makes web browsing truly snappy, that’s why I call it “excellent”.

Flash support: Flash 10.1 perform slightly higher, but don’t expect to watch a 720p video.

Email: HTC has “email search” – this is a big deal for everyone who gets a lot of emails, as you might need to search for key information hidden somewhere in the past 200 emails. It’s hard to believe but most Android 2.2 phones don’t have this feature.

Connectivity:  Creating a HotSpot is easy and this phone can be used as a 4G modem over USB.

The phone looks pretty basic out of the box, with a white plastic shell encasing a 3.5-inch screen, but with the large amount of plastic border around the display, it doesn’t look anywhere near as big as the iPhone or Samsung H1.

Hardware

The construction of the handset is plastic – top, bottom and back – so it doesn’t have the premium look or feel that some rivals do. The bottom of the device features a Mini-USB for charging and syncing, covered by a flap.

Display

The handset has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display, with an impressive 800 x 480 resolution. Below the screen are the customary four controls you expect with Android – home, search, back and menu- and here they are presented as backlit touch controls, part of the display…

Media

The device gives you the power button, the camera button and volume rocker. The top features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a line of hidden status LEDs that illuminate with battery, message and a call indicator. Around the back is a 5-megapixel camera but no flash. The phone has a single speaker on the back, next to the camera, which is adequate but pumps out basic ‘chav on a train’ sound quality.

The screen really lends itself to video playback, however, thanks to that sharp resolution. It supports 3GP, MPEG4, H.263, H.264 files, although as always you need to watch the codecs. nemoPlayer is pre-loaded (along with some other apps) to handle media and works well enough.

Other features

The Liquid also has designs as a media server, allowing you to share content over your network. This included a typical use of data, emails, the occasional app, using the GPS to locate a venue and so on. We made calls sparingly, turning off Wi-Fi when away from a connection to conserve battery.
